Solving challenges on unpiggable pipelines using dual-diameter MFL inspection technology

This case study describes PIPECARE's successful inspection of a challenging dual-diameter pipeline that was previously considered unpiggable using conventional ILI tools.

The pipeline presented multiple technical challenges including significant diameter changes along its length, tight-radius bends, and restricted access points. PIPECARE's engineering team designed a custom dual-diameter MFL tool configuration capable of maintaining sensor coupling and magnetic saturation across both diameter sections.

The inspection delivered high-quality metal-loss data across the full pipeline length, enabling the operator to make informed integrity decisions for a line that had previously lacked any ILI data.
