What Is In-Line Inspection?

In-Line Inspection (ILI), also known as smart pigging, is a method of inspecting pipelines from the inside while they remain in operation. Intelligent inspection tools travel through the pipeline with the product flow, collecting sensor data along the entire length of the line.

ILI tools detect and size a range of pipeline defects including corrosion, metal loss, cracks, dents, ovality, and wall thinning. The data is processed into detailed integrity reports that support maintenance decisions, fitness-for-service assessments, and regulatory compliance.
